How to open an M3U file
An .m3u file is not a video: it is a text file with a list of addresses. So "opening" it can mean two things: reading it to see what it contains, or loading it into a player to watch the channels.
To see what it contains: any text editor
An M3U file is plain text. You can open it with Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on a Mac or any text editor on your phone. You will see something like this:
- #EXTM3U on the first line: it marks the file as an M3U playlist.
- Lines starting with #EXTINF: they describe each channel (name, logo, group).
- Right below each #EXTINF, an address: that is the stream for the channel.
To watch the channels: load it into a player
To watch the channels you need a player that supports M3U playlists. There are two ways to give it the playlist: the file itself, or the address (URL) it is downloaded from.
Chlyra TV works with the URL, not the file: that way the playlist updates itself when your provider changes it, and it is available on all your devices. It does not import files stored on the device.
If you only have the file and not the URL
- Ask whoever gave you the playlist for the URLAlmost every provider offers it, and it is the easiest option: you paste it once and you are done.
- Or use the Xtream details, if your playlist is that typeOpen the file in a text editor and look at the channel addresses. If they look like http://server:port/username/password/number, that is where the server, username and password Chlyra TV asks for under Xtream Codes come from.
- Add it in Chlyra TVIn the web panel, go to My IPTV lists, click Add list and choose M3U (paste the URL) or Xtream Codes (enter the three details).
